dating y todo esa volada
If you find yourself *dating* in Chile, get ready to be confused. There are many stages in the dating game. It has taken me months to fully understand how things work around here, and countless charlas de como hacer todo la volaaaaaa. Here are the stages of dating:
UYYY que lindo ese loco. It is like at first sight, and translates to: I find them attractive. It means nothing yet, just an interest, a need to know more. I often confuse this with 'me gusta', and my friends are keen on reminding me that there is a difference (there really isn't). As my wise friend Rolo told me, gustar y atraer es lo mismo. You either like ice cream or you don't. And I love ice cream.
Another made up Chilean rule, you can only like one person at a time. That's crazy, haven't they ever seen a romantic comedy? Me gusta translates as like like. I haven't like liked very many people. Its not my thing but I always know right away when I like someone. But I have found many attractive. Entonces eso me lleva a las citas.
MAMA estamos saliendo!
Aun tienes corazones en tus ojitos. La primera cita trae de todo. Dressing up in a classic first date outfit, tweezing my moustache, and fixing my lipstick. No kisses on the first date, there has to at least be the illusion of a good ol' gal. I am an expert at first dates. Usually at the mall, they buy me ice cream and my small talk is the center of attention; with vivid charades to illustrate words I forget, answering questions while leaving genuine mystery, and of course, the giggles. After one date, I can tell if I like them or not. Si me tincan, si me gustan. La volada. Una cita, dos, tres, aqui viene el beso.
Mamita estamos andando
Tu mamita te dire, Megan, no existe esa cosa, y ella tendra razon. Y aunque te harias excusas en tu cabeza, decir que las cosas son muy complicadas, tu sabes que andar es una farsa. (Y si tu mama no te lo dice, tu tia te lo diria.)
Andando is the hardest to understand of them all. It is basically a fancy way of saying friends with benefits. People refer to it as the pre-dating. Apparently you are only supposed to andar with one person at a time, but why? I believe (that if necessary), go crazy, pélate, because it is not yet Facebook official or official by any means. But it can backfire once you actually get feelings. So if that happens to you, I suggest this famous Perls phrase, "yo no doy besos sin compromiso."
YYYYYYYYY:
Pero en el fin, si acaso llegas a pololeo, bien hecho y espero que tengas una larga relacion llena de perreo y amor.
Pololeo is boyfriend/girlfriend. Just you and him. That label is supposed to cement things in. Sometimes it does, sometimes it does not, but it is much easier to explain. The moms will be stoked, your friends will all have something to say, and the mush and the gush really begins. Y los te quieros y los te amos y todo esa vola. Y los besos. Mas besos. And it is hard to believe that after all of that, this has really only just begun.
Y mas en el fin, Chile amado para de perder en futbol.
Mucho amor-
